During my time as a Fellow with Facing Change Documenting Detroit, I met LaTanya Thomas, 49, at Detroit Day House, a homeless shelter for women. She survived a major car accident, leaving her disabled and lost her one and only son to murder at 18 years old, on her birthday. Her house was set on fire, leaving her homeless for over 2 months as she stayed at Detroit Day House run by Father Tom. Overcoming obstacles, she’s moved into a new house in MexicanTown, Detroit and begun a new life, finding food, furniture, appliances, and support. I photographed LaTanya for over 4 months as she rebuilt her life from nearly nothing.
This photo story has been shown at Photoville in Brooklyn as well as in Detroit during Dlectricity, projected on the Charles Wright Museum.
